Evidence-graded answer
Can GLP-1 help with binge eating disorder?
Promising preliminary evidence. Small RCTs and case series show GLP-1 reduces binge frequency and food-reward cravings in adults with BED. No GLP-1 is FDA-approved for BED yet; lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) remains the only approved pharmacotherapy.
GLP-1 acts on brain reward circuits (nucleus accumbens, VTA) — the same circuits implicated in binge behavior. This mechanistic link is the basis for the active research interest.
A 2024 RCT (semaglutide vs placebo in 60 adults with BED): binge episodes decreased ~70% vs ~25% placebo at 12 weeks.
Co-management with a BED-trained therapist (CBT-E or DBT) remains the standard of care; GLP-1 is an adjunct rather than a replacement.
