Can GLP-1 help with sleep apnea?

AReviewed by Jane Novak, MD, MPH· Updated 2026-05-31

Yes. Zepbound (tirzepatide) became the first medication FDA-approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity (December 2024). SURMOUNT-OSA trial showed 25-30 events/hour AHI reduction with tirzepatide vs placebo.

OSA in adults with obesity is partly driven by upper-airway fat deposits and reduced respiratory drive. Significant weight loss reduces both.

SURMOUNT-OSA (NEJM 2024): 469 adults with moderate-to-severe OSA + obesity randomized to tirzepatide vs placebo, 52 weeks. AHI reduction 25.3 events/hour (tirzepatide) vs 5.3 (placebo).

CPAP remains first-line for most patients with established OSA; GLP-1 is now an adjunct for adults with obesity, particularly those who do not tolerate CPAP.
