Can you drink alcohol on Wegovy?
No hard contraindication, but alcohol tolerance often drops sharply on GLP-1. Many patients also report reduced desire for alcohol — likely a secondary effect of GLP-1 on the brain reward system.
GLP-1 slows stomach emptying and reduces alcohol absorption variability. The combined effect for many patients is: stronger intoxication from less alcohol, and worse hangovers.
There's growing observational research (and some early RCT signal) that GLP-1 reduces alcohol use disorder symptoms in adults with both obesity and AUD. FDA has not approved any GLP-1 for alcohol use disorder.
Avoid heavy drinking, particularly during titration weeks (1-4 of each new dose). Sips with food are generally well tolerated at maintenance.
