Why headache happens on Ozempic
Reduced food intake means less fluid, less carbohydrate, and sometimes electrolyte shifts. Headaches usually trace back to hydration or skipped meals rather than the medication directly.
Timeline
Common in the first 2–4 weeks while you adjust to smaller portions; usually resolves once you settle into a steady eating pattern.
How to manage it at home
- Hydrate consistently — 2L+ of water daily, more if you exercise.
- Don't skip meals even when you're not hungry — small frequent intake stabilizes blood sugar.
- Add electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) if you sweat heavily or notice fatigue.
- OTC analgesics (acetaminophen, ibuprofen) are fine for occasional use.
- Sleep 7+ hours — fatigue is a common headache trigger on a calorie-restricted phase.
Call your prescriber if:
- Sudden severe headache ("worst of your life").
- Headache with vision changes, weakness, or confusion.
- Persistent daily headache beyond 2 weeks despite hydration and steady meals.
Frequently asked
Are GLP-1 headaches related to the medication or to dehydration?
Most are secondary to dehydration and low blood sugar from reduced food intake — not direct pharmacological effects of the drug. Patients who deliberately hydrate and keep regular small meals rarely report ongoing headaches.
