Evidence-graded answer

Can vegetarians or vegans take GLP-1?

AReviewed by Jane Novak, MD, MPHΒ· Updated 2026-05-31

Yes. Modern GLP-1 medications are produced via yeast fermentation, not animal sources. The pen device and packaging contain no animal-derived materials in current FDA-approved products.

Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are recombinant peptides produced in yeast β€” no animal origin.

Earlier insulin/exenatide preparations historically used animal sources; this is not the case for currently marketed GLP-1.

Protein intake on GLP-1 still matters β€” plant-based eaters should target 1.2-1.6 g/kg ideal body weight to protect lean mass during weight loss.
