What foods should you avoid on a GLP-1?

BReviewed by Jane Novak, MD, MPH· Updated 2026-05-31

Avoid greasy, fried, and ultra-processed foods (worst nausea), high-sugar drinks (rapid reflux), and large portions of red meat or cruciferous vegetables (slow gastric emptying compounds GI side effects). Adequate protein + soluble fiber + hydration are the wins.

Trigger foods most patients identify: fried chicken, pizza, ice cream, cream sauces, large steak portions, raw broccoli/cauliflower in volume.

Protect-against-side-effects pattern: 25-30g protein per meal, ≥30g fiber/day, ≥80 oz fluids, eat slowly and stop at the first "satisfied" signal.

Alcohol tolerance often drops sharply — sips with food are tolerated, heavy drinking causes outsized hangovers and nausea.
